NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE. |
Lowell Mason." Bethany." Sarah F. Adams, 1848. |
||||
|
|||||
There let the way appear Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou sendest me, In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me J: Nearer, my God, to Thee,:| Nearer to Thee 1" |
Then with my waking thoughts Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be : Nearer, my God, to Thee, :| Nearer to Thee! " |
Or if on joyful wing,
Cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot^
Upward I fly, Still all my song shall be, : Nearer, my God, to Thee, ^
Nearer to Thee. |

HOW GENTLE:GOD'S commands.
Slow and Soft. |

Heirs of unending life,
While yet we sojourn here,
O let us our salvation work With trembling and with fear. |
[Or this Hymn.]
God will support our hearts With might before unknown;
The work to be performed is ours, The strength is all His own. |
Tis He that works to will, 'Tis He that works to do;
His is the power by which we act His be the glory too.
Beddome, 1795. |
